Norton called them only Commandos, no Fastback distinction. The tank & tail section is made of fiberglass. The tail, radical-looking for the time is what gave the bike its nickname “fastBack”, which the factory adopted when other variants of the Commando were introduced. The first one was pushed off the assembly line in February 1968.

The standard Fastback was the first of the Commando model line. Launched at London’s Earls Court Motorcycle Show in late 1967, the Fastback’s fiberglass fuel tank was molded so that “ears” on the front of the seat flanked the rear section of the tank, eliminating the old-fashioned tank-mounted rubber kneepads.


While retaining Norton’s sturdy 750cc twin cylinder engine from the Atlas, the Commando engine mounts in a specially designed frame with a new and remarkably efficient anti-vibration system, known as Isolastic, which effectively isolated the motor’s oscillations as soon as engine speed exceeded 2,500 rpm.
